Overrated and underrated careers (and what you can learn from them)

Overrated and underrated careers (and what you can learn from them)Overrated and underrated careers (and what you can learn from them)As kids, we dream of fascinating careers from ballerinas to astronauts. Having tried a few vastly different careers on for size, I can attest to the fact that some glamorous sounding careers can be incredibly overrated. When people learn I once earned a living as a celebrity makeup artist, they want to hear juicy stories and behind the scenes gossip. The reality was often exhausting and mundane and depending on the client, all too frequently soul-crushing.No matter yur current career, you can probably find ways to use your skills in different professional arenas. Even if you love what you do, it might be interesting to challenge yourself to pair your best skills with completely different careers.Lawyer vs. crafterI was a trial attorney for 14 years. I primarily defended medical professionals in high-value malpractice cases. It was fascinating and chall enging, but incredibly stressful, said Tasha Agruso, Owner of Designer Trapped in a Lawyers Body.Even though TV shows and movies can make long trials look fascinating and intense, the reality is a lot different. Most people dont realize how infrequently you actually get to go to trial. Its very uncommon, at least at in my particular practice area Agruso said. So, most days involved sitting in my office, which wasnt very exciting.Agruso began creating art out of necessity when she couldnt afford the home dcor and furniture she loved. I taught myself how to make what I wanted. We invested in a variety of tools, from a table saw to my Cricut cutting machines, that have enabled us to make pretty much anything we can dream up for our home. The same but different In case youre wondering, Agruso says Believe it or not, making isnt entirely different from practicing law. As a lawyer, I had a result I wanted to achieve for my client and had to figure out a plan to get to that result with the facts that we had available to us. As a maker, I will dream up something I want to create for my home and then I have to figure out how to do it with the tools that are available to me.The takeaway? Agruso says Both definitely require thinking outside the box and making the most of what you have available to you.The love factor While one of her careers had an impressive title, Agruso says The fact that making is now my full-time career is my dream come true. I dont work any less than when I was an attorney, but the difference is that now it doesnt really feel like work. I would continue doing this even if I won the lottery. Score one for loving what you do.Youd be great at What else would you be good at? Sometimes we work so hard to hone our professional skills that we forget about the skills that make us potentially great elsewhere. Earlier this year, Kristie Goshow joined Preferred Hotels Resorts as Chief Marketing Officer. Though shes worked on everything from marketing efforts to e-commerce and digital marketing initiatives across the airline, hospitality, and travel technology spaces, Goshow sometimes wonders if she would have been better suited to be a TV host. I love to engage with audiences, share thoughts, opinions and what ifs. Audience responses, be they good, bad or indifferent provide stimulus and energize me. As a TV host, you are provided with a platform (and a privilege) to move others both mentally and emotionally. Thats a powerful endowment.Appreciate the underappreciated Then again, Goshow also believes one of the most underrated careers is that of a hotel housekeeper The housekeeper or room attendant is the quiet magic that keeps everything together. They watch how their guests live and subtly manage their hotel lifestyles in a peripheral and unobtrusive manner. Its an art. Their role provides a sense of visual completion making something right again. Ultimately, helping others just feels good.Find the career that fits While Goshow can en vision using her talents in a variety of careers, shes also cognizant of the fact that her current job fits her best. She also clearly understands how to highlight all the parts of the whole and appreciates the necessary skills of everyone on her team no matter their titles. At the end of the day Are you proud of what you do? Do you use your skills and find satisfaction? If your reality fits well with your fantasy career, youre on the right (career) track

Sports Career Preparation Starts in School

Sports Career Preparation Starts in SchoolSports Career Preparation Starts in SchoolA career in sports can be an option for people with several different types of backgrounds, even those who are elend athletes. Regardless of the pathway into a sports career, strong education and experience through internships and part-time jobs will be necessary. Some colleges and universities offer sports management programs, but your undergraduate studies dont need to be so specific to a sports career. Sports teams and leagues need business and finance professionals who can help manage operations. Marketing and public relations professionals are necessary to generate interest, and trainers and physical therapists are needed to keep athletes healthy and in top condition. Even a law degree can lead to a career as an agent representing athletes or as counsel to franchises and leagues. Some careers involve working directly for sports teams, while others involve working for separate businesses that also support athletes or teams. For example, a physical therapy clinic might specialize in working with athletes and see players from professional, college, or high school teams in the area. Journalists are likely to work for local news organizations that cover sports teams. Extracurricular Activities Many students interested in sports careers play sports at the high school and college levels. Obviously, on-the-field experience can be valuable preparation for future coaches, athletic trainers, athletic directors, and others. In fact, the teamwork learned in playing sports and the commitment required can help a person advance in many careers. But if youre not athletically inclined, there are still plenty of opportunities. Like other departments on campus, the athletic department often has part-time jobs available for students. Even if its just a job answering phones, it still is an opportunity to gain experience and establish connections in the field where you want to work. The sport s information department typically needs students to assist in tracking statistics and writing news releases. The school paper may need a sports reporter. Consider any department on campus that interacts with athletics, and there likely are opportunities available. If youre still in high school, ask a teacher, coach, or counselor about opportunities that are available. Extracurricular experiences will help you learn more about your own strengths, likes and dislikes, and motivations. In many ways, they are perhaps as important as your schooling. Internships and Part-Time Jobs Many sports management programs will help connect students to excellent internship opportunities. Students majoring in something other than sports management still can find sports-related internships with help from advisers or counselors. A schools athletic department or sports information department might offer internships for a variety of positions. Professional sports teams and semi-professional sports te ams also offer internships, as do businesses affiliated with the sports industry. Unlike internships, jobs will not get you college credit, but they can provide you with experience. Professional sports teams often need part-time or seasonal help, and school athletic and sports information departments hire students part-time even if internships are not available. Whether they be jobs or internships, opportunities can be found directly through employers or through dedicated job search sites like TeamworkOnline.com. Participation While not all sports-related jobs involve participating as an athlete, it is a good foundation to have and an excellent way to get a foot in the door. Pretty much any job related to coaching or scouting is only realistically available to someone with experience playing the sport. Even jobs that dont require direct experience as an athlete will be easier to get if you have the athletic experience to be able to relate on some level to those at the center of your chosen profession. This does not mean you need to be a highly skilled or highly successful athlete. A benchwarmer with a reputation for working hard in practices often exhibits the kinds of traits employers in any profession will value. And the recommendations you can get from a coach who appreciates your work ethic despite a lack of playing time can be the thing that gets you a foot in the door for a job or internship. Key Takeaways Not just for athletesMany career paths- finance, law, marketing, health care, and more- support the business of sports.Part-time workSchool athletic and sports information departments commonly hire students.InternshipsProfessional sports teams and leagues offer internships in a variety of areas.

Goodenough Goes Back to Batteries

Goodenough Goes Back to Batteries Goodenough Goes Back to Batteries Goodenough Goes Back to BatteriesJohn Goodenough revolutionized battery power in the 1980s as co-inventor of the lithium ion battery. His work is a big part of many devices we use today mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cordless power tools, electric cars, and more.Today, hes working with University of Texas research fellow Maria Helena Braga in work that could be an evolution of battery power for the 21st century.Maria Helena BragaShatter the Glass Ceiling, with GlassShe came to me with a possible glass addition for batteries, Goodenough says of Braga, who is also a professor at the University of Porto, Portugal. It became clear to me that, by working together, we could help get this to possibly be an alternative that welches both safe and low-cost for the future. Think of electric carsa fear is the flammable side a battery can have and its a barrier. The solid electrolyte they developed solves the problem, he says. T his is because the lithium ions could move fast enough because their version would be nonflammable, especially if the solid electrolyte was not reduced by lithium as an anode and you could plate lithium from the solid onto the anode without forming dendrites, which destroy batteries, he says. With glass, he adds, they have shown you can plate lithium or sodium without forming dendrites. A solid electrolyte that transforms ions as rapidly as a liquid means you dont need the liquid and if you can plate, which you cant do with the liquid, then you can get an anode which will give you bigger energy density, he says.Another positiv on the automotive front is that this is an all solid-form battery and has also been found to operate as low as -30 degrees Celsius, which he says hasnt been done before. This could possibly work for cars in cold situations, Goodenough says. And its safe and works when it comes to high voltage, combined with fast charge discharge. The heat problem occurs in lithi um ions because the ions require a certain amount of heat in order for lithium to move rapidly. So the rate at which the lithium moves depends upon the temperature, he explains.Having done thousands of cycles of testing, Goodenough and Braga are now looking to partner with industry on their battery. He realizes that winning over the skeptics may take time. Its safer, longer-lasting, and lower cost, he says. Weve only developed small cells and they have to make large cells to scale up for what weve developed, which we think is promising.Looking back, Goodenough is amazed by how batteries have changed since he helped take on the lithium-ion battery more than 30 years ago and is excited by the possibility of continuing to further the cause of technology. Its the creators of all these technologies that have been so much of the change, he says. But the battery work I was a part of did its part and I can feel good about that. We are a world that embraces technology in ways that couldnt have been foreseen and it continues to move so fast. You just try to keep up.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionThe battery work I was a part of did its part and I can feel good about that. We are a world that embraces technology in ways that couldnt have been foreseen and it continues to move so fast.John Goodenough, co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery

How to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekend

How to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekendHow to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekendAlong with resisting the urge to over-indulge over Thanksgiving will also be the added challenge of trying your best not to tune out your family by obsessively checking your phone.According to a study last year by technology services company Asurion, Americans check their phones about once every 12 minutes- or 80 times a day. But wait, it gets worse. Many people are ruder than ever.In a November 2018 study on cell phone etiquette, Asurion found that most people are sorely lacking in basic conversation etiquette, with about 45% admitting to talking, texting or checking their phones in a public bathroom. Added to that, nearly 60% of adults admit to pulling out their phones at the table while out eating or drinking with others. Of those, 75% said their table companions didnt mind. But we should mind. Heres why. Conversation is a lost art. People seem to be having a harder time connecting in person, and it shows. If youve ever struggled to answer a question during an interview or even to make small talk with a stranger, youre not alone. MIT professor Sherry Turkle, author of the bestselling book Reclaiming Conversation The Power of Talk in the Digital Age has written about how our reliance on technology has impacted, if not harmed, our ability to empathize. Like smokers who smell of nicotine even without a cigarette in hand, those who are overly tech-reliant can sometimes seem out of touch in person. And lest you think youre the only one, you arent. The weekend before Thanksgiving,Not a Cellphone in Sightwelches trending on Twitter along with wistful or hilarious memes.Convinced you should at least try to take a longer tech break? Try thisDont do it alone Theres nothing worse than trying to make a huge change in your life only to find everyone else in your orbit still committed to your former bad habit. Ask your family or spouse or friends to go tech-fr ee along with you, even just for a single meal. And then feel free to mock each other mercilessly as you start to twitch and cringe and desperately miss your phones.Create a backup plan (or person) Decide in advance how much time you plan on being off-line or away from your tech toys. Create an autoresponder and dont include an emergency contact number unless it cant be avoided. If you have a co-worker who will be working over the holiday weekend, consider having all your urgent issues diverted.Treat yo self Do you love jigsaw puzzles? Or maybe youre an avid home cook with no time to indulge. Find something you love but have been neglecting, and indulge over the holiday weekend. Youd be amazed at just how much creative time you can find if youre not constantly checking for email. And it isnt just giving something up. Youll gain not just time to recharge and have fun, but long-term benefits.Your anxiety level might drop Berkley News reports that Extreme angst is on the rise nationally and globally, especially among teens and millennials. Among other factors, preliminary findings from UC Berkeley sleep researchers point to a chronic lack of deep restorative sleep. The study also presents a link between sleep and anxiety. UC Berkeley neuroscientists Matthew Walker and Eti Ben Simon report that non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep plays a key role in calming the overactive brain, especially in the brain regions that process and regulate emotions. Ben Simon said, The mora time you spend in deep non-REM sleep, the less anxious you are in the morning. So, at the very least silencing your phone, or choosing to leave it in the next room overnight means chances are good youll sleep better and wake up less anxious. The grad stats are out - and here are the biggest earners

The grad stats are out - and here are the biggest earners The grad stats are out and here are the biggest earnersPosted July 30, 2014, by Marni Williams Graduate Careers Australias annual Australian Graduate Survey results were released last night with good news for student satisfaction, Western Australians and health graduates. Heres a quick zulauf down. Employment for graduates has slowed In 2013, 71.3 per cent of new bachelor degree graduates who entered the full-time labour market had found a full-time position within four months of completing their course. This is down from 76.1 per cent in 2012, but of the general labour force, just 3.4 per cent of bachelor degree graduates were unemployed, which is 4.4 per cent lower than graduates without post-school qualifications. But starting salaries are slightly higher, especially for women The average starting salary went up from $52,000 a year to $52,500. While that doesnt equate to much more than a couple of nice meals, this change was mainly due to an increase in the female median starting salary, which went up by $1,600 from 2012 to reach $51,600, while the male median was unchanged at $55,000. Top earners straight out of university Dentistry ($80,000) Optometry ($70,000) Engineering ($64,000) Medicine ($60,000) Earth sciences ($60,000) Grad salaries by state Graduates in Western Australia had the highest median starting salary, followed by the ACT and the Northern Territory. Victorian graduates earned the least. And the students are satisfied With a huge 93.9 per cent of bachelor degree graduates expressing broad satisfaction with their higher education experience, it seems that the slow employment on graduation doesnt tarnish their outlook. And with over 182,000 invited to respond and 109,000 making the effort, we can certainly see that as a significant tick of approval from Australias student population. Now, we just need to make sure they heed this message from GCA Executive Director, Dr Noel Edge All our research shows that unemployment is not a long-term concern for graduates and its important to understand that getting a degree is not just about the first job after university its about a life-time of advantage in the labour market as well as the potential for huge personal growth. We couldnt have said it better ourselves, Dr Edge. Think a life-time of advantage sounds appealing? Take a look at some zugreifbar coursesand get ahead.
